Lions and Leopards and other big cats in the Serengeti roar at night to communicate and mark their territory. The flat plains of the area can send sound a great distance. A lion roaring miles away can sound like its roaring right outside your door!

These roars, according to the guide, a member of the Meru, were feared to actually be the calls and shouts of the spells of witch doctors and evil shamans in the wilderness! These witch doctors and evil shamans were said to also ride upon the backs of hyenas. Recently, with the spread of modern knowledge to rural areas, these superstitions have been explained away, turning into campfire stories... though patches of rural areas still remain and still believe...
